The Importance of Girlfriends

Last night I had a couple of my girlfriends over to watch the movie “Bridesmaids.”  Seriously, one of my favorite chic flicks, especially since one of the girls that came over was getting married, and she’d never seen the movie before which I thought was pretty nuts. She’s watched it now so all’s good in the world…LOL.  I always do movie night at my place for my girls that are getting married, and yes, we always watch Bridesmaids.  It’s just a rite of passage.

One of my favorite scenes in the movie is the airplane ride….I laugh out loud every time!

We had a couple glasses of wine, and when I say “we,” I mean me.  What can I say, a couple or several glasses of wine never hurt anyone, even on a week day, right!

Watching the movie last night made me think about the concept of girlfriends.  It’s funny how life happens and every one gets so busy with their jobs and the kids that it becomes increasingly difficult to arrange things like movie night.

I have a quarterly date night with four girls where we get together at one of our houses for a pot luck dinner.  It’s always a blast because the wine and food is amazing, but it’s so hard to schedule in between our busy schedules.  We are due for our quarterly dinner now, and we’ve changed the date twice already.  Nevertheless, we’re all committed to getting together because we realize how important it is for us.  We’ve got such full work and family lives that having a time just for us to unwind, share and connect with each other is the BEST!

The awesome part about keeping your girlfriends in your life after marriage and kids is that even though you realize that the dynamic changes, the girls nights and dinner dates get a little further apart but when you do get together, its like no time has even passed at all.  Keeping your girlfriends close after you get married and have kids is so important.  And when I say close, I mean like quarterly date nights, at least.

Like Oprah says, everyone deserves a Gail.  If your lucky enough to have a couple Gail’s in your life, you’re doing something right!

oprah and gail

Now get cracking on those girlfriend date nights….

Love & Hugs,
